New Jersey treats permanent makeup / microblading / micropigmentation as body art / tattooing and requires practitioners to meet state body-art rules (sanitation/sterilization, age limits, facility licensing).
To become an independent permanent cosmetics practitioner in NJ you must complete an AAM-approved training (AAM primary or equivalent) and meet NJ apprenticeship and supervised-procedure requirements (AAM’s program + NJ’s body art expectations). Commonly that means a 100-hour training plus 15 supervised procedures (5 brows, 5 eyeliner, 5 lips)—AAM and NJ guidance describe these elements.
All practitioners/apprentices must hold OSHA-compliant Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training (29 CFR 1910.1030) before practicing.
You’ll also need liability insurance and to follow NJ facility permitting and sanitation rules (insurance and facility approvals are typical prerequisites).
To take the AAM Board Exam there is a fee (AAM exam fees and membership options are listed on AAM’s site).

At JBeautyPro Academy, we specialize in permanent makeup and advanced micropigmentation training, providing hands-on education led by certified AAM Platinum Trainers. Our mission is to empower each student with the knowledge, skills, and professionalism needed to succeed in New Jersey’s growing beauty industry.
